Yokai Dungeon
Yokai Dungeon

Adventure

Description

The lanterns gutter. The paper walls whisper. Beneath the floorboards of the old inn, a staircase leads not to a cellar, but to a realm where folklore bleeds into reality. Yokai Dungeon is a roguelike dungeon crawler steeped in the rich, eerie mythology of Japanese spirits. You are not a warrior invading a monster’s home; you are an exorcist, a scholar, or a desperate villager delving into a shifting labyrinth created by gathering malice and forgotten stories, where every creature is a puzzle and every item a fragment of a tale. You descend into the "Awakening Depths," a procedurally generated dungeon that physically changes based on the dominant yokai within it. The art style is a breathtaking blend of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and modern animation. Corridors might look like delicate ink sketches, while the yokai themselves are vibrant, living manifestations of their legends. You choose a protagonist with a unique perspective: the Miko (shrine maiden) who purifies, the Onmyoji (yin-yang master) who binds, or the Bakeneko (changed cat) who walks the line between human and yokai. Combat is a strategic ritual, not a brawl. You don't just attack a Kappa; you must bow deeply to it first, causing it to bow in return and spill the water from the dish on its head, weakening it. A Nurikabe (wall spirit) blocks your path; you must tap the lower section of its form to make it stumble and reveal a passage. Your resources are "Ofuda" (paper talismans), "Salt" for purification, and "Sake" to appease or enrage. Learning each yokai's unique behavior and weakness is the key to survival. The dungeon itself is a character. The presence of many Tsukumogami (possessed objects) will cause the halls to fill with animated, hostile furniture. A strong Yuki-onna (snow woman) influence will blanket the level in ice, creating slippery floors and freezing your resources. You collect "Mortal Belongings"—lost combs, broken vows, children's teeth—which can be offered at altars to gain blessings or craft powerful, temporary charms. Death is a return to the surface, but not a full reset. You retain knowledge of yokai behaviors and can permanently unlock new starting items or deeper lore entries that reveal more about the dungeon's tragic, interconnected stories. The ultimate goal is to reach the deepest chamber and confront the "Gathering Grief" that is giving form to all these spirits. With its authentic sound design of shamisen, biwa, and eerie silence, its commitment to mythological accuracy over generic fantasy, and a gameplay loop that rewards observation and respect over brute force, Yokai Dungeon is a masterclass in atmospheric roguelike design. It’s for the player who loves folklore, strategic combat, and the feeling of stepping into a living, breathing story where every shadow holds a meaning. The lantern is lit. The first step down awaits.
