Mahjong Solitaire
Mahjong Solitaire

Board

Description

Mahjong Solitaire (also called Shanghai Solitaire) is a single-player tile-matching puzzle game. It is not the traditional four-player Mahjong game from China. In this version, you start with a structured layout or "board" of many tiles stacked in multiple layers, often in a specific shape like a turtle or a dragon. All tiles are face-up. Each tile has a Chinese symbol or character on it (like Bamboo, Circles, Characters, Winds, or Dragons). The goal is to clear the entire board by removing all the tiles. You can only remove a tile if it is "free"—meaning it is not covered by another tile and has at least one of its long sides (left or right) completely open, not blocked. You remove tiles in pairs of identical matching tiles. You must plan your moves carefully because removing the wrong pair can block other tiles and make the game impossible to finish. The challenge is to find matching pairs and clear the layout completely. It's a game of observation, memory, and strategy. It became extremely popular as a computer game in the 1980s and is now found everywhere as a free casual game on phones, computers, and websites, often with many different tile designs and background themes.
